Blasts From the Past With Tony Hawk

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk says he's glad viral video has mainstream appeal.

In 2015, Tony Hawk and his buddies built a sideways loop, which is a fancy way to say downward spiral ramp made out of wood. He recently posted a mashup video of him falling over and over again trying to skate it.

In the post, Hawk says he's thankful the original RIDE Channel youtube video resonated with a crowd beyond hardcore skaters. The video has amassed 35 million views, “which seems outrageous,” he says.

Hawk, a skateboard pioneer who achieved 16 X Games medals (10 gold) from 1995 to 2003, says he didn't think the sideways loops would be such a struggle to learn.

“If I were to do it again, I would design it differently so that the radius doesn’t change the bottom," he says. "Actually I never want to do it again but hit me up if you plan to build one and I can give you some pointers.”

Speaking of blast from the past, check this long but amazing article on skater counterculture through the 80s and 90s, and the impact of the ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’ video game. This heavy punk soundtrack from the game’s first version is some head-banging moshing sh*t.
