X Games Chongli Canceled on Coronavirus Concerns
Next major X Games event scheduled to take place in March
X Games Chongli 2020 event has been postponed due to ongoing concerns about coronavirus.
The Winter X event was scheduled to take place Feb 21-23 at the Secret Garden ski resort within the city of Zhangjiakou, China. With the first reported case of the new virus coming from Wuhan, China on Dec. 31, 2019, however, China has become a hotbed and X Games has canceled in an abundance of caution.
Of the more than 12,000 global cases of the virus that have been reported, more than 11,860 of them occurred in China. All 259 coronavirus deaths occurred there.
“The safety of our athletes, staff and spectators is our top priority, and we will continue to closely monitor the situation,” X Games said.
X Games hosts events all around the world, from Aspen, Colorado and Minneapolis, Minnesota, to China and Norway. It did not say when it would look to reschedule Chongli, though its next major event beyond that will take place March 7-8 as Winter X returns to Norway for the fifth consecutive year.
The Norway event will host competitions in Ski and Snowboard Big Air, Slopestyle and Knuckle Huck at Hafjell Resort a two-and-a-half-hour drive north of Oslo.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization says it’s working with global experts and governments to rapidly expand scientific knowledge on the virus to track and hopefully prevent its spread.
